National Toll-Free Breast Care Helpline
1.800.I'M.AWARE®
This National Toll-Free Breast Care Helpline is answered by trained, caring
volunteers whose lives have been personally touched by breast cancer. Armed
with the latest breast health information, Helpline volunteers are committed
to providing timely and accurate information to callers with breast health
and breast cancer concerns.
In October 1989, 1.800.I'M.AWARE® was launched from a major medical center's
telemarketing department and calls were dealt with by their representatives.
It had always been the goal of 1.800.I'M.AWARE® to have calls answered
by trained volunteers, women who had faced this disease themselves. In April
1992, that dream became a reality.
Each year, the 1.800.I'M.AWARE® Helpline receives over 20,000 calls from
women and men across the country. Calls come in from women who have just been
told they have breast cancer, women who are concerned about their mothers
and sisters, and men who want to help the women they love. What these and
countless others receive is the warm, compassionate voice of a dedicated volunteer.
Objectives of 1.800.I'M.AWARE®
To provide timely and accurate information to callers about breast
health and breast
cancer.
To provide that information in a way that conveys compassion and concern.
To use facts about disease, screening methods, and treatment options,
encouraging
thoughtful, confident action.
To provide information regarding resources and support services in the
caller's area.
Volunteers are not medical personnel and do not provide
medical advice, make referrals to physicians, or evaluate physicians, medical
facilities or services.
